Hortatory Exposition

A. Definition of Hortatory Exposition

Hortatory exposition is a text which represent the attempt of the writer to have the addressee do something or act in certain way.

B. Generic Structure of Hortatory Exposition

1. Thesis, express an opinion of writer for a case / phenomenon, or thing that issue it discussed.

2. Arguments, the reason why there is a concern, and leads to the suggestion or recommendation.

3. Recommendation, statements how something should or should not exist or do.

C. Language Feature of Hortatory Exposition

1. Focusing on the writer
2. Using abstract noun; policy, advantage, etc
3. Using action verb ;we must act, etc
4. Using thinking verb ; I believe, etc
5. Using modal adverb; certainly, surely, etc
6. Using Modal Verb ; we must preserve , etc
7. Using temporal connective; firstly, secondly, etc
8. Using evaluative words; important, valuable, trustworthy, etc
9. Using passive voice
10. Using simple present tense

Dialogue : Expression to Motivate

  1. A president director of a steel company got a problem with his Hongkong partner and he shared to his accountant.
Accountant                   : “ Good morning Mrs. Morgan why do you call me ? “
President Director         : “ Sit up please, hmm … I have a difficult problem this month. ”
Accountant                   : “ What is your problem Mrs. Morgan ? I think I can help you. “
President Director         : “ Our Hongkong partner cancelled the agreement with this factory. “
Accountant                   : “ So what is the relation about this problem with our factory ? “
President Director         : “ Huh … you can see our money development getting increase since we have a relation with him. “
Accountant                   : “ I think no, because we work so hard for our factory, not only him. “
President Director         : “ Are you sure ? Can we get some good business partners again ? “
